Shaw Woods is a non-profit outdoor education organization. Our mission is to foster an ethic of responsible environmental stewardship, by providing educational programming and self-directed learning to educational groups, community organizations and the public at large. We also strive to teach sustainable forestry practices which manage the social, economic and ecological values provided by forests.

We are recruiting for an Outdoor Educator. This is a term position from October 2026 to June 2027 working 0 to five days per week as required.

As an Outdoor Educator, you’ll share your skills, knowledge, and love of the natural world with children while helping create a safe, welcoming, and inspiring space to learn and grow. From October 2026 through June 2027, you’ll facilitate our programs and support children through nature connection, play, exploration, mentorship, and hands-on outdoor skills.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead education programs for children JK to grade 12 and other interest groups.
  • Design and lead engaging activities with a focus on fostering the children’s nature connection and environmental stewardship, nurturing curiosity and creativity, supporting their positive social, emotional, and physical development, developing an understanding of local ecology; and building wilderness skills.
  • Maintain an inclusive, supportive, and safe space for all participants.
  • Report any incidents of concern (i.e. safety, harassment) to the Program Manager.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan curriculum-based programs aligned with educational standards.
Qualifications
  • Must have Ontario Teachers certification
  • Strong naturalist and outdoor skills
  • Professional experience working with children and a strong understanding of their developmental stages
  • Skilled in outdoor risk management, ensuring safety while fostering a constructive learning environment
  • Eager to learn, collaborate, and grow through constructive feedback
  • Outgoing, energetic, and enthusiastic professional who maintains a positive, engaging approach to all tasks
  • Resilient and adaptable, maintaining a positive, professional demeanor in challenging outdoor conditions, including inclement weather
  • Valid vulnerable sector check is required prior to start
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification
